Hamamatsu Japanese Language School Speech Contest Highlights

Voices of Success – Exceptional Success

On October 23rd, the Yuto Cultural Center in Chuo-ku, Hamamatsu City, buzzed with energy and emotion as ten international students delivered fluent Japanese speeches at the Hamamatsu Japanese Language School Speech Contest. The event, hosted by the Shonan Japanese Language School Hamamatsu Branch, centered around heartfelt themes: “My Dreams for the Future” and “My Important People.”

The finalists were chosen from a pool of 160 students who had been in Japan for less than 18 months. Representing eight countries including the Philippines, Myanmar, Peru, and Vietnam, they impressed the audience with their language skills and personal stories.

One memorable moment came from 22-year-old Nguyen Anh Xuan Phuong of Vietnam. Sharing an episode titled “Japanese People Around Me,” she recounted getting help from a passerby while searching for a postbox. “They even apologized for not finding it,” she said with a smile. “I felt so touched.” A fan of anime, Phuong said she began studying Japanese out of love for the culture. Her dream? To work at a traditional Japanese inn.

“We want our students to be able to express what’s in their hearts, in Japanese,” said Aiko Kawai (66), head of the school’s academic department. The contest was a vivid reminder of how language bridges people, dreams, and cultures.
